Getting Started

Advising

At MCC, you’ll receive personalized academic advising from an advisor who will help you stay on track to reach your graduation goals.

Your advisor is a helpful guide who will support you and get to know your goals and needs.

Here are some important things to remember:

  • As a new student, you must meet with your assigned advisor during your first year at MCC to sign up for classes. Only your assigned advisor can remove the registration hold so you can register.
  • Schedule a meeting with your advisor before registration to make sure you have all the information you need.
  • Check in with your advisor at least once each semester for advice and support.

These meetings are a great chance to plan your class schedule and ask any questions you have. Remember, we’re here to help you every step of the way!

Advising FAQ’s

What is academic advising?

Academic advising is more than just course selection. At MCC academic advising is about supporting your entire college experience through meaningful, ongoing relationships between students and advisors.

Our Advisors are here to help you:

  • Decide on a program of study or program concentration
  • Understand degree requirements
  • Choose classes for your upcoming semester
  • Connect you to campus resources to help you succeed in your courses
  • Explain how transfer credit fits into your degree plan and goals
  • Understand the transfer process to a four-year school
  • Explore different careers
  • Identify strengths, address challenges, and explore opportunities!

How do I get assigned an academic advisor?

Academic advisors are assigned to students upon completion of their admissions application. Advisor assignments are based on several factors including:

  • Your program of study
  • Your student status (high school or postsecondary)
  • Your last name
  • Your location

How do I find my academic advisor?

Once you have submitted your admissions application, you will receive a welcome email with the name of your assigned advisor. A welcome packet will follow in the mail with this information as well.

You can also look at the list of advisors on this page, which will show what areas each advisor covers.

When should I meet with my academic advisor?

It is best to meet with your advisor as early in the semester as possible. Aim to check in at least once each semester, but feel free to reach out anytime you need help or guidance. Your advisor is here to support you whenever you need it!

If you are a New Student, you must meet with your advisor to register for classes during your first year at MCC.

What can cause a change in my academic advisor assignment?

Ideally, your assigned academic advisor will remain the same throughout your time at MCC. However, there may be instances when your advisor changes. For more information on how advisors are assigned, please refer to the question: “How do I get assigned an academic advisor?”

Why is it important to meet often with my academic advisor?

In addition to personalized support, meeting often with your advisor can help students with academic planning, goal setting, and degree progress tracking. This can lead students to better academic performance, clearer career and academic pathways, and on-time graduation.

What is the difference between an Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of General Studies, and Certificates?

  • Associate of Arts and Associate of Science (AA/AS) degrees are designed to transfer to a four-year college. MCC offers designated field degrees in many programs that make transferring even easier!
  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees are designed to develop skills for entry-level employment or to upgrade skills to improve job opportunities within an existing position. An AAS is not designed to transfer to a four-year, although some classes may still transfer.
  • Certificates are designed to develop skills for entry-level employment or emphasize skills in a particular area of study. Generally completed in under a year.

I tried to register for a class but couldn’t because of a prerequisite error. What does this mean?

Prerequisite errors pop up when you haven’t met the Math or English requirement to enroll in the course. It may also pop up if you have not taken a course that is required. Contact your advisor for assistance.

How do I transfer my MCC credits somewhere else?

Click the “Menu” button on the MCC website and look for the “Transcripts” link in the gold bar. Follow the directions to create an account or log in with an existing account.

How do I transfer credit from another college/university?

You will need to have an official copy of your college transcripts sent to MCC to be evaluated. Transfer credits depend on a number of things: where you previously attended college, when you attended, and whether the course applies toward the requirements for your current program at MCC.
